When people visit NYC they are often on the lookout for celebrities. They visit the trendiest places with their eyes wide open, always on the lookout for whoever might be hanging around the Big Apple. Barnes & Noble Events takes the guesswork out of spotting your favorite celebrities. Take a look at the list of upcoming events to see who will be in town during your next trip to NYC. All you have to do is purchase the book to gain admission to one of the book signings. (See details below on how to win a Barnes & Noble gift certificate to use toward your own book purchase.)ย ย With more than 100,000 events per year, customers have lots of opportunities to meet some of their favorite celebrities. Just this weekend I attended a Barnes & Noble Event at the Union Square store.
My Personal Experience at Barnes & Noble Event at Union Square with Sherman Alexie
I was first introduced to Sherman Alexie by my students who were reading his book, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. When I heard his memoir was recently released and that he was speaking at the Union Square Barnes & Noble I knew it was a book signing I couldn’t miss. Unlike any other book signing I have attended, Alexie is more like a stand up comic than your typical author at a book reading. The audience laughed together, cringed together, and cried together. The experience truly mimicked that of a live standup comedy show at one of NYC’s top venues.
During this emotional 90 minute combination of poetry, story telling, and comedy fans of Sherman Alexie shared a wonderful experience. It isn’t often you have the chance to meet the person behind a memoir. Having heard his stories and experiencing his emotions changed the way I read his book. Alexie held nothing back from the audience. He put everything out there to help his readers to truly understand the man behind the words. There was no hiding the good, the bad, or the ugly. He proved himself human. An anomaly for a child from his background, a survivor, a comedian, a father, a son, and so much more. He provided insight into the Native American culture that most Americans will never fully understand.
How to Find Great Barnes & Noble Events
Sherman Alexie said it is every author’s dream to do a book reading and signing at the New York City Union Square location. With celebrities like Kevin Hart, Eddie Izzard, Bethany Mota, Don Winslow and more all hosting events at local Barnes & Noble stores in June alone, fans can fill up their calendars with fun celebrity encounters.
Each Barnes & Noble store knows the community it serves and offers tons of exciting author events that fans in the area are sure to love. Between the Barnes & Noble Store Locator, the monthly events release or contacting their local Barnes & Noble store, fans can easily find out what special guests are making appearances at their Barnes & Noble each month. I encourage you to take a look and find out who will be in your neck of the woods this summer!
Use the hashtags #BNAuthorEvent and #BNStarsShine and post on social media while you meet your favorite authors at Barnes & Noble.

I wish I could have gone to this B&N event. I have not heard of his book, but it sounds like my type of genre. And huge bonus points that he was like a stand-up comic. I love going to comedy shows. I need to start looking into more B&N events ๐

Tickets for events at Union Square go really fast, so be sure to sign up for the newsletter and stay on top of it if you want to actually get in! I also got to see some amazing events at NYU, Cooper Union, Columbia, and the CUNY schools. NYC is super expensive, but it makes up for it in terms of free entertainment.

The B&N events are a lot of fun, and they also bring the celebrity author crowd here in LA, too. I’ve been to a couple of them, but it’s been ages. Time to get back! Also, thanks for sharing about “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.” I’m adding it to my reading list now!

Ha, I never thought of this! I feel like it would be so hard to spot celebrities in NYC, it’s just so many people! I have spotted a few celebrities in LA and Southern California, but it was just sheer coincidence. Another great way to see celebrities is to go to a taping of a show as well!

I have not heard of his book, but it sounds like a great experience for his fans and as you say that he put everything out there to help his readers and to really understand the man behind his words. I haven’t been to NYC yet but it will be so cool spot tourists there if I go ๐

I am so bad at spotting celebrities because I’m always walking and looking at my surroundings! Especially in NYC – there’s so much to look at! I would definitely need events like this to meet a celebrity!

I have not read Sherman Alexie yet. But reading the post and realizing that the man is a powerhouse of talent and full of stories, I will definitely try and get my hands on his books. Yes, indeed this book reading session must indeed have been a different experience altogether.

This sounds like an awesome experience! You know I never ever wanted to meet a celeb, just to meet or take a picture with them.
However, I would surely attend an event to be able to learn something from a famous successful person that I adore. Bernes Noble seems to be an amazing place.

The last time I was in New York City my boyfriend and I met the actress from Stranger Things. It was a chance happening; she was just shopping in a random vintage store. So cool! I’m now adding some of these books to my Kindle list, so thanks for that!

Aww the next event in San Diego is a children’s book event, Be Quiet? Never heard of this book before but B&N events seem pretty awesome!!

This sounds like an awesome event, and its wonderful that you were able to attend. I never thought about looking up events before visiting New York. That’s such a great idea! I agree with one of the other commenters, that I was under the impression that the only way to see a celebrity was to attend a show taping or maybe see one by random. I’m planning a visit to New York this Fall and will definitely search for events while planning activities. There’s a Barnes and Noble right near my house, so I will be sure to look up their events as well.

Who knew Barnes Nobles is a celeb sighting hot spot!? I guess it is true when they have new books coming out. I live in LA and our celeb sighting is probably visit the hot new and trendy restaurants. How cliche right?

Haha omg I’ve always wanted to do this! I was accidentally there the day that 50 Shades of Grey author was there and the crowd was insane; all screaming like they were at a rock concert. It was actually kind of funny…I love hanging out at Barnes and Nobles.

I need to start looking into these types of events! I’m still very much a bookworm, and I’d love to go back to my roots, so to speak. ๐
JM Kayne says

I am always secretly on the hunt for celebs in NYC and I’ve yet to see anyone awesome….except for Kelsey Grammar walking down the street but, ehhhh, I could do better ๐ Next time in town I’ll have to check out the roster of who’s signing at B&N!

I love attending book readings – it just gives you an even more intimate feeling than just reading a book by yourself. It’s like looking behind the scenes. I’ve never been to NY, but if I go, I’ll make sure to check the upcoming events!

That is one fancy looking building! I would want to do a book signing there if I were to ever write a book haha It is nice to hear that Sherman Alexie showed all his emotions and personality. When I imagine book signings or fan greetings, I think of a long boring line where you get to the front, get a quick “Hi, what’s your name? Thanks for coming.”, maybe a quick picture and move on.
Jo says
I love reading books so a chance to meet my favorite authors would be just so incredible. Can you believe I have never been to a book signing event? Sometimes I feel I live in the wrong part of the world haha. Love B&N and hope you get to meet more stars ๐

I love celebrity sightings! I’ve never gone to any book signings before but this is definitely interesting. I might need to start going to these type of events.
Lana says
Wow! Really awesome event! I’ve never read this book, but I think I have too. I think New York is full with this kind of events, you are so lucky that you can join them.
Reshma says
It’s always a pleasure to meet any celebrity in person – those star-studded eyes & the butterflies in the stomach! I’m a bibliophile and I certainly wish meeting my favourite authors! Glad that you were able to meet Sherman!
